Tesla's "job" could best be described as a cross between engineer and inventor. He made almost no contributions to basic science, but he could look at a problem and very quickly come up with a practical solution IF ONE EXISTED. He thus invented the electrical starter for automobiles, a practical AC power system, and devices necessary for radio transmission (although Marconi vigorously disputed that). However, he was never able to develop large scale, wireless transmission of electrical power -- none of his ideas did, or ever could, permit someone to use an electric toaster without metal wires from a power source.
