What is first infantry division?

It is a combat formation of the US Army. Before World War One, except during wars, the US Army was mostly scattered in small detachments in frontier forts and coastal installations. It was rare to see so much as a regiment assembled in one place. When the US entered WWI, it had to create a large army for fighting in Europe, so once more divisions were created. The modern organization of the US army goes back to this time, 1917. WWI US divisions were very large, with over 26,000 men. All of them were infantry divisions, meaning they were intended for ground combat, and made up of foot soldiers. Each division had four regiments, in two brigades (two regiments to a brigade). In the 1st Infantry Division, the four regiments were the 16th, 18th, 26th and 28th Regiments of Infantry. The army called these "square" divisions. Just before WWII the US redesigned its infantry divisions. The new design was the "triangular" division, with three infantry regiments, instead of four. Brigades were done away with. Regiments were smaller, so the new triangular divisions had just under 15,000 men. In the WWII "triangular" 1st US Infantry Division, the three infantry regiments were the 16th, 18th and 26th Regiments of Infantry. The US 1st Infantry Division was the first one organized in 1917, making it the oldest division in the US Army. It has been in continuous service since 1917. Its members wear a patch on the shoulder of their uniforms, which is a shield with a large, red numeral "1" on it, giving the Division the nickname "Big Red One". The Division was one of three US infantry divisions which hit the beach in the D-Day landings in France on June 6, 1944.

How many people were in regiments in World War 1?

In the US Army there were four regiments to a division in WWI. There were two brigades in a division, and each brigade had two regiments. US divisions were huge compared to those of every other major combatant, with about 26,000 men. The British system was more complicated. They have a number of regiments with a long and distinguished lineage and history. But British regiments did not fight as formations. Each British regiment has a number of battalions. In the British system three battalions, almost always from different regiments, were brigaded together. Three such brigades made up a British infantry division.

How much did Italy owe for world war 1?

In June 1940, Italy's mobilised strength was 1,630,000. This would later rise to a peak of 2,363,000.Mussolini once boasted of 8 million Italian bayonets but that was not credible or achieveable. At the outbreak of the war the Italian army had a strength of 73 divisions made up of 106 infantry regiments, 12 light infantry regiments, 10 mountain regiments and 12 cavalry regiments, 5 armored regiments, 32 artillery regiments and 19 engineer regiments. The average Italian infantry division was little smaller than the American infantry division. And out of the 73 infantry divisions, only 20 were fully manned and equipped. The problem with the Italian army was its equipment. It had 7,970 artillery pieces but only 246 had been manufactured since 1930. Many had been upgraded with pneumatic tires replacing old wooden wheels. Their aircraft, trucks and tanks were even more out of date. Their tanks were too small to combat a modern mechanized army. What were the different battle divisions in the World War 1?

American Infantry Divisions of WW1 The typical American Infantry Division was organized into what was referred to as a "square division". In 1939/1940, the US Army reduced the size of the division into what was referred to as a "triangle division". The Division was "square" in that it was built on the base number of 4. There were 4 Infantry Regiments in a Division, that were paired into Brigades. The infantry division had an artillery brigade which consisted of 3 large batteries. Also included in the unit were machine gun battalion and support units. During WW2 the typical infantry division had 3 regiments and each had 12 companies divided into 3 battalion. They had 3 artillery battalions but later a heavy battalion (155mm Howtizer) was added. This may not be the intent of your question but I tried.

Did all American infantry helmets have same tactical markings in World War 2?

Probably not, as those devices were often thought up as the war progressed; as well as accepted or not acceptable in different combat zones.

How did soldiers decorate their helmets in World War 2?

US Army M1 steel helmets were not issued with cloth camo covers as were the US Marines fighting in the Pacific, during WWII. Consequently, soldiers didn't do to much writing on steel. The common thing was to paint their division patch on the sides of the helmets (1st Infantry Division, 3rd ID, 4 ID, etc.). In Vietnam, the US Army began, for the first time, issuing cloth camo reversible covers for the steel M1 helmets. At this time US Soldiers began writing graffiti on their helmets.

Where in France did the 111th regiment 28 Division have a battle on 29 September 1918?

he 28th Division traces its history from the briefly active 7th Division, formed in May 1917. In July 1917 or later, the division was renamed the 28th Division. It was activated in September 1917. Its initial organization included the 55th Infantry Brigade (109th and 110th Infantry Regiments) and the 56th Infantry Brigade (111th and 112th Infantry Regiments). During World War I it was involved in the Meuse-Argonne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne, and Ypres-Lys operations. During the war it took a total of 14,139 casualties. An honor battalion of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen of the "Iron Division" (These are not soldiers, these are iron men. Gen. Pershing) dedicated the Pennsylvania World War Memorial in Argonne, France, in 1928.
