The first animals to cross the Karman line at an altitude of 100 km did so in a V2 rocket on 20 February 1947. They were a bunch of fruit flies.

The first mammal in space was apparently a rhesus monkey named Albert II on 14 June 1949, in a U.S.-launched V-2, (after the failure of the original Albert's mission on ascent). Albert I reached only 30-39 miles (48-63 km) altitude; Albert II reached about 83 miles (134 km). Albert II died on impact after a parachute failure.

Laika (meaning 'Barker' in Russian), was the Soviet space dog that became the first dog sent into outer space, and the first animal into orbit. Sadly, it is likely Laika only spent a few hours in space before dying from overheating.
