Serial killers driven to act out the brutality repeatedly, leave psychological markers. In multiple-victim cases, we always look to see if there is a signature so we can tie victims together. The Green River Task Force's internal investigative tool, unknown to the public was a 12 page FBI profile psychological profile of the Green River killer, written by John Douglas, then an FBI special agent with the Behavioral Science Unit, Quantico, VA in the summer of 1982, revised in 1984. The profile was never made public.
When the FBI builds a profile of a serial killer, it involves analyzing the behavior, characteristics, and patterns of the criminal to create a psychological and demographic representation. This profiling helps law enforcement agencies understand the motives, potential background, and methods of the killer, which can aid in identifying and apprehending them. The process often relies on data from past cases, victimology, and crime scene analysis to generate insights into the killer's likely behavior and potential future actions. Ultimately, the goal is to provide investigative guidance and enhance the chances of solving the case.
Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb (played by Ted Levine) is a serial killer who skins his victims in the movie The Silence of the Lambs. Jodie Foster plays FBI agent Clarice Starling who is trying to create a "profile" on this killer with the help of her working relationship with Dr. Hannibal (Hannibal the Cannibal) Lecter (played by Anthony Hopkins.) Lecter is incarcerated for his crimes and the FBI uses him to try to get into the mind of the killer on the loose.
Long Distance Serial Killer
FBI
If they have I can find no written proof of it. Most likely responsibility for this is the fact that the misconception of only five victims throws any investigation slightly off-track. For the most accurate profile of the criminal all information needs to be considered. This case is no different. I have also seen many books written based on erroreous data, such as the victims were strangled, the killer had to be a doctor, and/or the killer disappeared after Mary Kelly's death. It would be interesting for the FBI to attempt a profile with all possible victims included.
