1Kings 6:1 says Solomon began building the temple in the fourth year of his reign. Since he began his reign in 970 B.C. That would mean he began construction of the temple in 966 B.C.
This verse also tells us that it was 480 years to the day after the Israelites left Egypt that work on the temple was begun. This would set the date of the exodus at 1446 B.C.

Solomon's Temple is regarded as the first temple of the Judaic faith, built by King Solomon himself. However, there are numerous references in the Bible, showing that the Temple was used extensively and continuously for the worship of many other gods, including the sun God and Asherah. On this evidence, Solomon's Temple could be regarded as also the temple of the early polytheistic faith of Judah.
In 2nd Samuel 7:2, King David said "Here I am living in a house of cedars while the Ark of the true God sits in the midst of tent cloths" expressing his feelings and desire to build the house for Jehovah (the temple). In verses 12 & 13, Jehovah told David that it was his son who would build the temple. David did much to collect many of the supplies needed to build the temple as recorded in 1 Chronicles 29:1-9. In 1 Chronicles 28:10, David tells his son "See, now, for Jehovah has chosen you to build a house as a sanctuary. Be courageous and go to work." (NWT)
It took approximately 100 years to build the main temple of the Aztecs, Templo Mayor, in Tenochtitlan. Construction began in the early 14th century and continued until the early 16th century when it was destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors.
The only Temple attributed by the Jews to King Solomon is the Temple destroyed by the Babylonians after the defeat of Judah and the exile of the Jews .
The tabernacle (Mishkan), detailed in Exodus ch. 25-28 and constructed in the time of Moses, was carried with the people. Later, the Temple (Deuteronomy ch. 12) was built by King Solomon and stood for 410 years in the time of the prophets. After the first exile, the second Temple was built in the time of Ezra and stood 420 years. It was destroyed 1943 years ago.

God allowed Solomon to build the temple as a sign of His approval and favor towards Solomon. Solomon was chosen by God to carry out this important task due to his wisdom and devotion to the Lord. The temple symbolized a place for God to dwell among His people and for Israel to worship Him in a central location.
