What coins were used in 1170?

1170 was during the reign of Henry II. The coinage used was 'cross' and 'crosslets' more commonly referred to as the 'Tealby' coinage as over 6,000 of these pennies were discovered at Tealby in Lincolnshire in as late as 1807. The issue remained virtually unchanged for 22 years apart from minor variations in the king's portrait. The coins tend to be poorly struck on irregular flans. They are categorised into six classes labelled up as 'A' , 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E' and 'F'. If you need more info contact Michael Trenerry the hammered coin expert in Truro, Cornwall.
