The Continental Army was funded and under direct control of the generals appointed by the Continental Congress. The militias were funded by individual states and answered to state leadership, and would fight alongside the Continental Army when battles took place inside their respective state.

The British army was the best in the world at that time. They had uniforms and weapons. They were well trained. The Continental army was not trained and most did not have uniforms. Some men barely had shoes. But what the Continental Army had was determination, the desire to save themselves and their families, and they knew the land. The Continental Army would shoot from behind trees and bushes while the British marched in nice straight lines.
