It was supposed to be no more than a court verdict about one slave's application for his freedom.

But it turned out to have big implications, because the court declared that slavery was legal in every state of the Union. According to their reading of the Constitution, slaves counted as property, so if a man's property was sacred, slavery could not be abolished.
