This seems like a simple question, but unfortunately the answer isn't simple.

The ancient Egyptians knew that feeding liver to someone suffering from night blindness could help. This is due to the presence of vitamin A. However, they didn't know why it helped, they just knew it did.

In the mid-18th century, it was discovered that citrus fruits could prevent scurvy. This is due to the presence of vitamin C. Again, the compound actually responsible was not known.

The first vitamin bioactivity to be isolated from its source was called vitamin A. However, today we call it vitamin D (confused yet?).

The first clear, unambiguous, isolated individual known chemical compound that was clearly a vitamin was probably vitamin A (that's the same vitamin A that we call vitamin A today). It turns out that any of several related compounds can serve the same purpose, since your body can turn them into the compound that's actually needed.
