The Napoleonic Code, or Code Napoleon is the French civil code, established under Napoléon I in 1804. The code forbids privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that government jobs go to the most qualified. Brought into law on March 21st 1804. The Code, with its stress on clearly written and accessible law, was a major step in establishing the rule of law. Historians call it 'one of the few documents which have influenced the whole world'.
I wrote a twelve page essay on why Code Napoleon was the greatest contributor to liberty and freedom in the western world. To summarize it all into a few lines, it gave all those in Napoleon's empire a taste of freedom and equality. When Napoleon was exiled and his empire disbanded, the peasants wanted the freedom again, so revolutions began.
The Napoleonic Code influenced the law systems of many other countries.
It is very important in the countries of Costa Rica and the countries surrounding France.
