There were three gentlemanly professions- you could go into the church, the military or politics. Solicitors and doctors were also acceptable although a cut below the three above. Finally you could be in trade (as a wealthy merchant) but this was not considered gentlemanly at all.

A landed gentleman wouldn't have a job at all, his job was to manage his estate, take rent from his tenants etc
