The longest telephone call is still going on, even though the two people who started it are both dead! The phone call was started during the second world war, as a hotline between the British and American governments. Because the line was of such vital use, engineers had to work constantly to make sure it was still working - it breaking for a moment could have spelled disaster!. To ensure this, the engineers started a test call alongside the main-line, which they kept going throughout the entire war. Engineers would repeat series of numbers to each other, and note down the response from the other end as proof the line was working. Later, the line was also used to exchange coded messages in a similar way. Even after the war ended, the never-ending phone call continued, through the cold war and to the present day. Engineers still work in shifts, to make sure the trans-Atlantic undersea link is still active - vital for the operation of the modern internet!

Leased Line refers to a type of telephone circuit. It is not used much anymore. This is a continuous telephone line between two locations. It is always on, you do not dial a number as with a normal phone line. Leased Lines are used to monitor fire and burglar alarms and for low-speed data transfer. There is a monthly fee paid to the phone company to use Leased Lines. Many phone companies will no longer install new LL services, but will continue to honor existing leases.
