Best Answer

Survival of the species in a changing environment. A species evolves when its survival is threatened by its environment.

EX: Ho-mo sapiens evolved from primitive hominids by natural selection of those hominids with the larger brains. So gradually the primates acquired larger brains and were better able to survive by out-thinking their predators, including other hominids.

Ho-mo sapiens means "wise man" in Latin.

Charles Darwin proposed the theory of Natural Selection as a mechanism of evolution. His theory includes many aspects. The organism that is better suited to the environment has a higher chance of survival. There is competition for resources and the organisms that have adaptations to assist in acquiring these resources will survive. This leads to reproduction and is considered an important aspect of being Darwin "fit". Helpful adaptations would be passed on through the generations because of reproduction. He did not understand genes, but knew there was a way that adaptations were passed down from generation to generation.

There was another contributor to his theory and that is Alfred Wallace. He came to the same conclusions as Darwin and became a contributor because Darwin dragged his feet to publish his work. This was because Darwin's ideas went against the political ideas of the time.

Darwin especially wanted to understand the different adaptations of organisms on the Galápagos Islands. Darwin reasoned that plants or animals that arrived on the Galápagos Islands faced conditions that were different from those on the mainland. Perhaps, Darwin hypothesized, the species gradually changed over many generations and became better adapted to the new conditions. The gradual change in a species over time is called evolution.

Natural selection was the mechanism for evolution that Darwin proposed, though there are other mechanisms of evolution.

Genetic drift and gene flow are two more mechanisms of evolution

Charles Darwin developed the theory of what?

He developed the theory of evolution, or more properly the mechanism of evolution, which we call natural selection.

Who proposed the idea of the theory of evolution?

The idea of evolution was thought of long before Darwin, by a man named Count Buffon. What Charles Darwin did was to successfully come up with the mechanism of evolution, known as natural selection.

What knowledge did Darwin lack that scientist now use to explain evolution?

Darwin lacked a sensible mechanism of heredity. His concept of blending was so off the mark that a Scottish engineer showed that evolution could not take place with the mechanism Darwin proposed. Mendel's concept of particulate inheritance was the correct solution to this problem.

Who introduced the evolution theory?

Darwin introduced the modern theory of evolution by natural selection, but it was also introduced by Lamark and other earlier biologists but Darwin was first to theorize about natural selection as the mechanism.
