A mix-up in orders lead to the light cavalrymen (hussars, lancers, and dragoons) of the Brigade charging Russian artillery batteries and cavalry. Hit by murderous fire from the artillery, hundreds of British cavalrymen were killed during the charge and subsequent retreat of the Brigade.
Tennyson wrote "The Charge of the Light Brigade" to memorialize a British attack at the end of the Crimean War. The attack was ill-fated and unnecessary, given that (unknown to the brigade) the nations involved had agreed to a truce.
