Sopwith Camel Sopwith also built Pup, 1-1/2 Strutter, Triplane, Snipe and Salamander BE.2 and RE.8 built by Royal A/C Company. SE 5 ---the best-looking a/c of WW1 (IMHO).
There were many aircraft used in WW1. The aircraft were usually identified by the manufacturer's name and a designation and number. Some had common names. Some German aircraft had names given to them by the British and some had names that were commonly used by the Germans.
I don't know which German fighter plane you refer to.

The RAF had several fighter planes in WW2, but perhaps you are thinking of the Supermarine Spitfire. It served as a fighter plane to the end of the war, and as a ground attack plane in Korea and Malaysia, but it is best remembered for its role early in the war, in the Battle of Britain.
