Good question. There is no particular reason why it should be famous. It has some theatres, it runs off Trafalgar Square and it has been mentioned in various songs but apart from that it is a fairly ordinary street.

The west end of London is where allot of theatres and concert halls are,there are other places but this is the most prominent.

None of the other theatres where his plays were performed were in London because the City of London was actually unfriendly to theatres and did not allow the big public theatres to be built there. All of the big public theatres were either north of London or south of the River Thames in a district called Southwark. (One of them was even further south, at Newington near Clapham)
