The first electronic computer, the Atanasoff Berry Computer, was invented because Doctor John Vincent Atanasoff at the University of Iowa in Ames Iowa had too many large difficult to solve systems of simultaneous equations. The machine was invented one night in a bar in Indiana where Atanasoff had gone to get away and the ideas started coming together. It was built between 1939 and 1942. Atanasoff designed it to solve systems of simultaneous equations of up to 29 variables, because this would handle most of his problems without having to make the machine too big (it came out about the size of an office desk).
Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was the first general-purpose electronic computer.

The inventor of the electronic general purpose computer is widely acknowledged to be Alan Turing. Turing conceptualized the idea of a universal computing machine and played a crucial role in the development of the first electronic computer, the Colossus, during World War II. His theoretical work also laid the foundation for modern computer science.

ENIAC, an acronym for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer, was the first reprogrammable general purpose digital electronic computer. The machine was designed and constructed to calculate artillery firing tables for the Ballistic Research Laboratory of the U.S. Army. A link to the Wikipedia article on the ENIAC is provided.
