In 1852, US President Millard Fillmore authorized the mission to
Japan by Commodore Matthew C. Perry. He arrived there in 1853 and
is credited with opening up trade with Japan. He would make another
voyage there in 1857.
The main result of the Columbus' voyage of exploration was the
beginning of exploration and claiming North and South America.
