That the law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in Tennessee was a bad law and needed challenging. At least that is the " evolution " of the dispute. Actually it started as a stunt to get the city where the school was some free publicity and business, so the city fathers cooked up this scheme and got John Scopes to break the law. The trial developed along a bit of a different line when the layers got there.
