It is the gift from her district given to her from Madge. Mockingjays were produced from Jabberjays and Mockingbords. The capitol never intended for them to exist. Since the pin is like her signature, she becomes the Mockingjay of the rebellion. Just the same....the capitol never intended for mockinjays to exist...Hope this helped (:
The pin was of a Mockingjay, which was a muttation of a Jabberjay that the Capitol created but completely backfired. The Jabberjays and Mocking birds mixed to form Mockingjays. Thus showing the Capitol that they failed and showing resistance.
The significance is that the pin will always remind her of home. And if she dies she will die will the memory of District 12 will with her.
Prim, Katniss's sister. She gave it to her because she wanted Prim to have it in case she died in the games.
Madge comes to the justice building to say goodbye to Katniss and asks Katniss to wear the pin as her district token.

After the reaping, when Katniss was in the Justice Building, Madge visited her. Earlier, Katniss and Gale sold strawberries to her father and saw Madge, who was dressed for the reaping and wearing the pin.
in book one katniss's mother promises that she will take care of prim and not leave
Katniss promises her that she will wear the mockingjay pin durung The Hunger Games.
Mockingjay's are first mentioned when Madge gives Katniss the Mockingjay pin.
I'll try to answer this without ruining Catching Fire & Mockingjay if you haven't read them already, but it'll be quite hard. Ok, so the mockingjay pin stands for good luck, and is meant to keep you safe, but Katniss, without realizing makes it more. The mockingjay pin turns into the sign of Panem's rebellion and Katniss is the face of the rebellion. Hope this helps :)

In the book, Katniss doesn't give Prim the mockingjay pin. Madge, the Mayor's daughter gives the pin to Katniss after the reaping. In the movie, Katniss says "I got this for you today" and hands her the pin, then proceeds to say "as long as you wear it nothing bad will happen" as prim is scared for the reaping.
She's the friend of Katniss, and gives Katniss the Mockingjay pin.
Prim, Katniss's sister. She gave it to her because she wanted Prim to have it in case she died in the games.
Madge, the mayor's daughter.
Madge comes to the justice building to say goodbye to Katniss and asks Katniss to wear the pin as her district token.
Madge, Katniss's friend, gives the mockingjay pin to Katniss as a token for her to carry in the Arena. It also appeared as her token in the Quarter Quell that Katniss is in, her second Hunger Games. It becomes the national symbol, in the Capitol a fashion symbol, in the Districts a symbol of rebellion.
Before her first Games, Katniss received a pin that had a mutt on it, a mockingjay. When she unknowingly started the rebellion by out-smarting the Capitol, the mockingjay turned into her persona. When she went into the *Spoilers* Quarter Quell Games in Catching Fire, she was rescued by the Rebellion, and they called her the Mockingjay and she was the face of the rebellion of the Districts against the Capitol and President Snow, in the book Mockingjay. :)
Because, it's the pin Katniss wore in the Games. Where she rebelled against the district.
