How did Pinocchio get swallowed by the whale?

When he tried to decide what to call his new puppet, Geppetto thought of a family named Pinocchio, and decided to call him that.

The name Pinocchio simply means "piney", the thing (-occhio) carved from pino, pine. In Tuscan Italian, pinocchio is the term used to refer to the pine nut, usually called pignoli.

In the book, he worked hard, took care of an ailing Geppetto and finally put aside a little money for a suit, but gave it all up when he heard that the Blue Fairy was ill. So the next morning he woke up and he was changed, because his heart had changed (before, he was a mischievous boy who didn't like school or work and made very bad friends).

In the movie, he dies saving his father from the giant whale Monstro, and the Fairy changes him because he has proven his worth.
