The Jews charged Jesus with blasphemy. Pilate pointed out that the Jews were to judge their own religious questions. They replied that they had no permission to put anyone to death, as was their intention with Jesus. Since blasphemy was not a charge under Roman Law, under which Jesus was tried, it must be concluded he was sentenced without charge, even though the Jews tried to bring some allegations of treason against the Roman state to give it a semblance of legality.
Charge #1
Jesus made himself to be the Son of God by claiming that God was his Father, making himself (Jesus) equal with God. This was a Jewish crime punishable by death. The Jews could not kill anyone themselves, so they brought Jesus to the Roman authorities to have them kill Jesus. Perhaps the Jews specifically wanted Jesus crucified which they may not have been allowed to do? The Jews did not seem to have a problem with stoning people to death for crimes of adultery. There is an account recorded in the Gospel of John where Jesus writes on the ground preventing the stoning of a woman caught in the very act.
Charge #2
Jesus made himself out to be the King of the Jews. The Jewish authorities convinced Pilate that anyone making himself out to be a King was against the Emperor Caesar.
PILATE "Are you the King of the Jews?"
JESUS "Do you say this on your own, or have others told you about me?"
"My Kingdom does not belong to this world".
PILATE (to the crowd of Jews)
"Do you want me to crucify your King?"
JEWISH CHIEF PRIESTS said,
"We have no King but the Emperor Caesar."
Then at Noon on "Good Wednesday" (The preparation day for Sabbath Thursday Passover) Jesus was handed over to be crucified that day.
And it didn't help that:
Jesus broke the sabbath law (In the eyes of the Jewish authorities) by healing a man on the sabbath.
Jesus said, "Before Abraham (Father Abraham) was born, I am". That incited a riot.
Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. He claimed that the Scriptures pointed to himself.
Jesus claimed that Moses, in whom the Jews placed their hope, would accuse them.
Jesus told the Jews that if they didn't believe he was who he said he was, that they would DIE IN THEIR SINS.
The two things that angered the Jews was that Jesus said he was the king of the Jews and also that he was son of God.
1. He had threatened to destroy the temple.
2. He had claimed to be the Son of God.
3. He had stirred up the people against Caesar.
working on the sabbath day and being with a gentile
The main complaints the Jews had against Jesus were that he 1. healed the man on a sabbath day 2. claimed God was his father. (John 5:15-18)
When Jesus was crucified He was placed alongside two criminals. The two criminals hurled insults and accusations at Christ as they were all slowly dying. At one point, one of the criminals recognized Jesus as the Messiah and asked that he be remembered when Jesus came into His kingdom. This was clear evidence of saving faith, to which Jesus responded "today you will be with Me in paradise." The criminal believed Jesus was God's Son and that He would rise from the dead. As such, he put his faith in Christ. This is saving faith and those who also trust Christ will see this gentleman in paradise.
Crucufixion was a common form of execution. We do not know the specific charges against the criminals who were crucified with Jesus. There was nothig special about them; Jesus was crucified as a common criminal.
From the US Constitution: "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court."
No statement, for or against, has been made.
The name "Jesus" has two syllables.
Jesus was crucified alongside two other criminals, he was treated as a criminal. The disciples of jesus were not crucified.
Pilate and Herod were both Roman-appointed rulers in ancient Judea. They were known to have had a strained relationship, as Herod held authority over Galilee while Pilate was the prefect of Judea. Despite their differences, they came together during the trial of Jesus, as described in the New Testament.
Joseph and Mary are the two earthy parents of Jesus.
what was the value if two sparrow in Jesus day
According to the Bible, Jesus died before the two thieves who were crucified with him. This is commonly referred to as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
