World War II was the most widespread war in history, and countries involved mobilized more than 100 million military personnel. Total war erased the distinction between civil and military resources and saw the complete mobilization of a nation's economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities for the purposes of the war effort; nearly two-thirds of those killed in the war were civilians. The Holocaust, which was largely conducted in Eastern Europe, was the systematic killing of nearly 11 million political, social and racial minorities (Gypsies, the disabled, etc.). Six million of these victims were Jews who were also persecuted by the Nazis.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Japan had their country nearly all burned up and leveled due to incendiary bombing campaigns and the two atomic bombs dropped on them. They had to suffer from the radiation effects for decades. They still have a team of Japanese and American studying and dealing with the effects of the radiation.

Europe had so much damage from the Allied bombings that it was mostly rubble in most of the cities and military sites. The villages and farmlands fared a little better. It took decades to remove all the rubble and rebuild all those nations. The population however was easily rebuilt (the US had a baby boom for 15 years too).
