In the 1900 book edition of The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West tells her crows to tear into small piecesDorothy Gale, her pet dog Toto, and their friends the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman. Then she tells her crows to peck out the eyes and tear into pieces all five friends. And she tells her bees to sting all five friends to death. And then she tells her enslaved Winkies to use their sharp spears to destroy all five friends. It's only with the Winged Monkeys that she says that the four friends must be destroyed, and only the Cowardly Lion is to be brought back, harnessed and ready to be worked to death for her. The Monkeys carry out the Witch's commands, except regarding Dorothy and Toto, whom they bring carefully back to the Witch's Yellow Castle. For the Monkeys recognize the protective mark from the kiss of the Good Witch of the North on Dorothy's forehead, and the secret power of the Slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East on Dorothy's feet. The Scarecrow is left, declothed and destrawed on the ground. And the Tin Woodman is dropped from a great height to lie battered, dented, groanless, and motionless on sharp rocks. In the 1939 film version, the Wicked Witch of the West threatens to drown Toto, kill Dorothy, and set the Scarecrow on fire. But she doesn't single the Tin Woodman out for anything other than the general blanket order of destruction to Dorothy's friends.
