A tithe is when the peasants/serfs of medieval times had to pay the church one tenth of all their earnings. I am unsure how frequently they had to make this payment but if they didn't they could be excommunicated. The tithes were stored in a tithe barn which was a large building in the centre of the manor.
hope this helps!! :)
A Tithe is medieval term used to denote a tenth part of ones income. This tenth part being given anally as a voluntary contribution or a tax to support a religious organisation.
The word tithe means to give a tenth of your belongings to the Church. It comes from the principle in the Old Testament of how the temple workers were taken care of. The Levites and Priests, who only worked in the temple and kept everything running smooth there, had no other jobs. This meant that they were reliant on the other Israelites giving food and other necessities to them for them to stay alive. So The Lord declared that everyone must give a tenth of their posessions to take care of the temple workers.
This still goes on today because many pastors take care of the church full time. So they don't have an alternate means of providing food, clothing, and shelter for their families. Because of this, they are dependent on the congregation giving to support them. In addition to this, it costs money to keep the church running; there are bills for the building mortgage, for the electricity, for the water, and for other items such as paper towels and toilet paper that must be replaced. For this reason, the church is dependent on each person giving a portion of their money to take care of it. So people still give a tithe or 10% of their money to take care of these needs.
Specifically in terms of the European middle ages, a tithe was a tenth of the grain production from the land held by the peasants of the manors controlled by monasteries or priories. The tithe was far from a voluntary donation, it was essentially a tax, and mounted supervisors were in the fields during harvest to make sure every tenth sheaf was set aside for collection by the church. It appears that this tax was in many cases deeply resented, as accounts of attempts to conceal grain or otherwise defraud the collection process are legion.
The medieval church would receive a tithe of one tenth of the agricultural production of the people who lived in any given parish. This was not a voluntary contribution, as it is in modern times, but a required tax. This was a significant source of income for the church, and the profits from the tithes would go to funding village priests, building and maintaining church buildings, and to the support of charitable institutions such as hospitals.
a tithing is a group of ten people or when you give money to the medieval church you have to give one tithing wich is one tenth of your food or money
