Corduroy roads are roads that are built with logs or poles placed across swampy or unstable ground. This type of road was used by wheeled vehicles and horses. Cattle and herds of pigs or sheep were not allowed on the road because of spaces between the logs and poles. Sometimes hewed or sawn lumber was used in the corduroy road. Look up some of the books about the old days written by Eric Sloane.
They are roads. They were first used in the USA during the American Revolution. They were used to help travelers cross swampy areas.. But they were made of huge Logs! So the ride was quite bumpy.

Military Engineers made Corduroy Roads from felled trees. Most roads were dirt. Some had gravel or stone bases under the packed earth. Corduroy Roads were a quick and easy way to provide a hard surface for foot and horse traffic.
Cordury roads were important because it was a new way of transportation that hadn't been built yet.
The most popular type of clothing made out of corduroy is pants. It is also used to make shirts, jackets, and skirts. Corduroy is a very durable fabric and is also used to upholster furniture.
