The machine gun caused trench warfare to be a necessity as 90%+ of the casualties of WW1 were from this weapon. The use of Napoleonic tactics against new technologies was disastrous.

through trench warfare, and in offensives it would be... barrage, over the top , slaughter.
The use of trench warfare
A trench knife is a specialized knife made specifically for the close quarter combat on World War 1. Most of the fighting took place in narrow trenches or on "no mans land" a trench knife, which consisted of a brass knuckle with a long blade permanently affixed to it was a handy weapon to have. The trench knife doubles as a brass knuckle and a knife; with the knife securly attached to the user's hand, the enemy could not easily take the knife from the user. In trench warfare where firing a gun while in the trench could accidentally harm a fellow soldier who happens to be behind an enemy, a knife or bayonet was a safer means to eliminate an enemy.

Trench
Trench Warfare took place most notably in World War I. This type of warfare involved digging trenches (large lines about 12 feet deep) and slowly wearing down the enemy. Trenches were a good shelter from enemy small arms fire and well protected from most artillery strikes. Hope this helped. Type Trench Warfare Wiki into google.
Second battle of the Marne
Commonly called "field works" before World War I, these types of defenses are older than armies. The first known use of trench warfare was as a defensive measure by the Romans when armies were on the move. Trench warfare was effectively used during the Civil War, most notably during the sieges of Petersburg and Vicksburg.
Trench Warfare. AKA: Slaughter (men getting in the way of machines)

Trench warfare is where two armies are at war, and they both are fighting from trenches, or long ditches in the ground. It is a very old type of warfare, but it was at it climax in WWI. After that the ability to fight on the move known as "Mobility" made trench warfare out dated. It is still taught to some extent for defending a small position. But for the most part it has been abandoned. Check wikipedia for Trench Warfare. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trench_warfare
