Zimbabwe was a British colony - known as Rhodesia - which issued a Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965. From 1965 to 1980, a bitter insurgent war ensued with the Rhodesian Security Forces fighting against the Chinese-backed Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) and Soviet-backed Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA). Thus, when the government of Ian Smith fell, and Mugabe came into power, and inventory of weaponry from all over the world came into his possession.

Small arms of the current Zimbabwean military and police include:

  • AKM and variants. As ZANU was the Chinese-backed party, the Chinese Type 56 AK variant is most common, although AKs of other nationalities are in use, as well.
  • RPD machine gun
  • RPK-47
  • PK machine gun
  • DsHK machine gun
  • Dragunov SVD
  • Sako TRG
  • L85A1 assault rifle. Purchased from the British, and most likely for special purpose use.

Other weapons from the UDI period which remain in the Zimbabwean inventory, and may be issued for special usage include:

  • Vektor R1 (FN FAL, manufactured under licence)
  • Royal Ordnance L1A1 (FN FAL pattern rifle, with a proprietary magazine)
  • Heckler & Koch G3 (manufactured under licence and supplied by Portugal)
  • Royal Ordnance L4 (BREN machine gun, reworked for the 7.62x51 cartridge)
  • Colt M16 (limited numbers came into the possession of the Rhodesians)
  • FN MAG and variants (includes British L7)
  • Browning M2 HBAR
