Midsummer, or the summer solstice, which is traditionally celebrated on June 24, has always been viewed as a magical time. It is associated with springtime and the growth of new life, fertility and love. It was common to have celebrations involving bonfires at night to drive away evil spirits who are thought to be especially active at this time.

Well, they thought they were good things for the most part. Although certainly there were cynics who sneered at such notions, there were also idealists who took them seriously.
The Elizabethans celebrated Midsummer with bonfires, feasting, dancing, and various outdoor activities. It was a time when people believed in magic and folklore, so there were traditions such as gathering herbs for medicinal purposes and performing rituals to ward off evil spirits. Maypoles were also a common feature of Midsummer celebrations during the Elizabethan era.

Elopement was a common theme in Elizabethan and Jacobean comedies, including some of Shakespeare's: consider A Midsummer Night's Dream, or The Merry Wives of Windsor, or Cymbeline. The audience would have accepted that as a part of such stories.
