The history of greek gods is very long and sometimes tedious. In very early Greek times, they worshipped statues and such, but later they developed gods and goddesses. There are many, but the most known are the 12 main Olympian gods, listed below: Zeus - God of gods, womanizer, powerful symbol - lightning bolt Hera - Queen of gods, Zeus' wife, jealous, goddess of women and childbearing symbol - peacock Hestia - Godess of the hearth symbol - flame Poseidon - God of the sea, easily angred symbol - trident Athena - Goddess of wisdom and the arts. Is Zeus' daughter symbol - owl Apollo - God of light, music, the sun, medicine. symbol - lyre Artemis - goddess of the moon and the hunt. Apollo's twin sister. symbol - bow and arrow Aphrodite - Goddess of love and beauty, married to Hephestus symbol - swan Hephestus - God of metalworking, very kind but ugly symbol - hammer Demeter - Goddess of agriculture, nice, mother of Persephone symbol - wheat Ares - God of War, brutal, mean symbol - spear Hades - God of the underworld, cruel, unhappy symbol - Cerberus, his 3-headed dog Dionysus - God of wine and celebration, cheerful symbol -grapes Hermes - messenger god, trickster symbol - his shoes There is SOOO much more to Grecian mythology than that. Each person has their own story, and it's important to know about their backgrounds to fully understand why they do what they do. It'll also explain why there are fourteen Olympian gods instead of 12!

Zeus (Zoo-s)- He is king of the gods and is married to Hera (queen of the gods). Although Zeus is married, he still falls for other goddesses and even beautiful mortal women such as Io. Zeus is the youngest of his siblings, but yet he is more powerful than all the gods combined. The statue of Zeus is one of the seven wonders of the world, showing that the ancient Greeks worshiped Zeus alot. Zeus is one of the big three

Hera (Hair-a)- Hera is married to Zeus, but knows about his affairs with mortal women. The poor women who Zeus fell for often felt the wrath of Hera. Even the mortal children of Zeus were cursed. Take Hercules for example. Hera is the goddess of marriage, women, and young children. She is actually Zeus's older sister.

Hades (Hae-Dee-s)- God of the underworld and one of the Big Three. Hades doesn't get along with Zeus or Poseidon, and doesn't have a throne on Olympus. Hades kidnapped Zeus and Demeter's beautiful daughter, Persephone, and keeps her held hostage for 6 months each year.

Poseidon (Po-si-don)- Poseidon is also one of the Big Three, and he is god of the sea. Poseidon lives in an underwater palace, but yet he has a throne on Olympus, unlike his brother Hades. Poseidon is married to Amphrotrite. (Don't get her mixed up with Aphrodite.)

Hestia (Hess-tea-a)-Hestia is the kindest of the gods, the sweet and friendly center of joy :). Hestia used to have a throne on Olympus, but gave it to Dionysus once he rose to goddly-hood (is that a word???) She said that her place wasn't on a throne but tening to the home and the hearth, of which she is the goddess of.

Demeter (Dee-meet-er)- Demeter is the mother of Persephone and the goddess of grain and agriculture. She has fallen for her younger brother Zeus, but isn't married. When Hades kidnapped Persephone, Demeter was so broken up that she refused to let the crops grow. During the six months when Persephone was with her, Demeter let nature bloom, but during the other six, the earth was cold and dark.

Aphrodite (Afro-dite-ee)- The beautiful Aphrodite was born of sea foam. As she rose from the blue sea, the the graces watched in awe as they sent her up to Olympus to become the goddess of beauty and love. Zeus forced Aphrodite to marry his ugly, crippled son, Hephaestus. Aphrodite hates Hephaestus and has had countless children with Ares, the cruel, handsom god of war. When Greek's wanted love, they would pray to Aphrodite.

Hephaestus (He-fes-tus)- Hephaestus was thrown off Olympus by Zeus when he sided with Hera in one of his parents' arguements. This caused him to be crippled the rest of his life. He is married to the beautiful Aphrodite and makes wonderful jewels and metalworkings, concidering he is the god of blacksmithing and fire. Hephaestus is kind, and liked by many other gods.

Ares (Air-es)- This selfish, cruel, handsom god of war is loved by Aphrodite and hated by everyone else on Olympus, especially his step-sister, Athena. Ares often brags about things he can't do, which earned his the reputation of a modern day jock.

Athena (A-then-a)- This goddess of wisdom was born from her father's head! She always has an owl on her shoulder, but is often shown in battle armour, as she is also the goddess of battle strategy (not war) Athena is the favorite child of Zeus, and took an oath never to marry.

Hermes (Her-me-s)- This foolish messanger of the gods got into mischief before he was even a day old. He stole Apollo's cows as an infant! Hermes is one of the only living thing that has ever made it into the underworld (and back.) Zeus gave his son a pair of winged shoes, which enabled the wearer to fly!

Apollo (App-ol-o)- Apollo is the god of music, harmony, happyness, poetry, etc. His twin sister Artemis and he are very close, and once murdered fourteen people when their mother ridiculed their mother, whom the love very much. Apollo is supposively the best player of music in all the world, and is very good looking. He is also the god of the sun and drives a charriot across the sky each day.

Artemis (Art-e-mis)- Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, and the moon. Once she was born, she begged her father for: eternal youth, a quiver of bows and an arrow, a pack of hunting dogs, some Niads to hunt with, and his vow never to force her to marry. Zeus granted her wishes. Artemis has turned men into animals and favors women by far. She was only once in love with Orion, but he was murdered by a giant scorpion, who was sent by a jealous Apollo.
