The maid's job would be to live with a particular family and help the woman of the house with her everyday work. The maid was a part of the family and every member of that family would respect her. They would assist with looking after the children, cleaning and cooking. The woman of the house and the maid would usually work together because there was enough work to keep the both of them occupied. The maid would also assist with the household finances. She would also have her own room in the house with her own property.

Maids didn't exist until Elizabethan era. The young women who helped the queen were called Ladies in Waiting and they were young noble women hoping to find a good husband and earn points at court for the family.

__

Maids did exist. Chambermaids cleaned the living quarters and empty the chamber pots each day. Young noble women were attendents to the Queen or Princess, not servants.

People grew up very fast in the middle ages. They were a baby and then they were grown, so children didn't have "chores" they had work. By the time a person was 7 or 8 years old they were working. As a peasant they were helping with in the fields, with animals, in the kitchens of the estate, and what else was required of them. There was very little time for play and there certainly wasn't anything called a "teen" ( that won't come until 1940). You were born, you worked and then you died. The life span was about 40 years old, but most people were dead by 20 from wars, disease, accidents, or murder. Babies died within a few hours of birth many times.
