In the Years following from 1870 to 1910, more men, and even women earned their Bachelor's Degree, going up more than 50%.

in 1870 only 2% of all 17 year-old graduated from high school; an even lower percentage went onto college. Then by 1900, 32 states required that children between the ages of 8 to 14 had to attend school.

So in the 40 years in the Gilded Age, Education has become bigger and important in everyday life.

Schools were limited through the 1800's and classes were usually taught by males. At the turn of the century, education was not provided to all. Unfortunately, the discrimination was not only racial, but economical, and females were not considered very bright. Children with mental and physical disabilities could be refused an education.

Did all Victorian schools do the cane?

Certainly all Victorian schools had corporal punishment, but the cane did not come into vogue as the favourite implement until the later Victorian period from about 1870 onwards. During the early Victorian era, 1837 - 1870 the birch was the favoured implement, especially at the great public and boarding schools. By the end of the Victorian era, in the early 1900s, the birch had largely fallen into disuse, and the cane reigned supreme as the implement for corporal punishment in virtually all schools.
