There wasn't a general election like we have today when Jefferson became President. The President was decided by Congress. One of the issues of the time was immigrants. The President was empowered to deport dangerous foreigners in time of peace and deport or imprison them in a time of hostilities ( sound familiar?) The Alien laws were never enforced, but they did frighten shiploads of Frenchmen out of the country and stopped others from coming. Added to this was the Sedition Act that harnessed the freedoms of speech and press. Many outspoken Jeffersonian editors were indicted under the act, but only 10 were brought to trial. Resentful Jeffersonians refused to take the acts calmly. Jefferson worked Behind the Scenes as Adam's vice president against the acts. As far as Jefferson was concerned the 13 sovereign states had entered into a "compact" or contract by creating the federal government. The Federalist fought back with dirty politics against Jefferson. He was accused of having robbed a widow and her children of a trust fund and having fathered many children by his slaves ( this was true when it came to Sally Hemmings) Old ladies fearing his election buried their bibles or hung them in wells. Jefferson won by majority of 73 electoral votes to 65. He was inaugurated President on March 4,1801.
Thomas Paine had an ability to describe clearly the different sides of controversial issues. He wanted a country of the people.

I think they are. The key issues may be important because the candidates running for president do a lot of debating across the country. The key issues are the debate topics, and winning debates (I think) are good for getting more votes.

Realigning is just another way of saying Republican or Democrats have more people on their side to vote against the party and any issues brought to floor of the senate. The realigning started with the election of 1800 with Thomas Jefferson by overturning the political party of Alexander Hamilton.
so you understand the issues which your making important decisions about and you are affected by those decisions as are the people you represent. Why is it important that the president live in the United States? The answer to that is obvious. Its the same thing
