He was short, highly controversial and extremely cruel. He was classed as a primitive man who was cautious and slow-moving in both his political life and writing style. However, he was a fierce debater and clever public speaker. He had an amazing ability to absorb detailed knowledge. He was always lonely too - his first wife died (Ekaterina Svanidze) of tuberculosis, his second wife (Nadezhda Alleluyeva) killed herself in 1932. Apparently due to Stalin's dictatorial rule of the party. His only child (Jacob) from his first marriage fell into German's hands in the WW2, he was killed later. The two children from his second marriage out-lived Stalin but their relationship was never stable. Vasili was an Officer in the Soviet airforce - he drank himself to death in 1962. His daughter (Svetlana) fled to the United States in the 1960's.
