The Bible refers to the land as the Land of the Canaanites, although it is doubtful that the people of the southern Levant actually thought of themselves as 'Canaanites' during the Bronze Age period. Far from entering the land, the Israelites turn out, according to archaeological evidence, to have been rural Canaanites who left the region of the rich coastal cities and settled peacefully in the hitherto sparsely populated hinterland.
