Out of 285 people on board, 151 people were killed, 20 bodies were never re-covered and were said to of had floated out to sea. Many people were drowned or smothered by the thick silt in the river.

The noise of the disaster was loud enough to be heard 10 kilometres away in Waiouru.

The express carried nine carriages and one engine, the last two carriages carried most of the survivors. But alot of people were able to make it out of the wreckage and free themselves from the mud-laden floods.
