The Titans were a race preceding that of the Greek gods. Both belong to the same culture. Titan gods like Kronos, Gaia, Oranos, Prometheus and Atlas were supposedly extremely large, hence their name. The rule of the Titans was also called the Dark Age due to the cruel nature of the ruling Titan, Kronos.

The three primary Greek gods - Zeus, Poseidon and Hades - were the sons of Kronos, King of Titans, and his wife Gaia, Titan Goddess of Nature. However, in order to make sure that his sons could not overthrow him, Kronos swallowed them whole as soon as they were born.

His wife Gaia however saved one son by feeding Kronos a rock instead. This son was Zeus who later became the King of The Gods. When he got older, he somehow fed his father poison causing him to vomit out Zeus' brothers, Poseidon and Hades. (Poseidon and Hades were, after all, gods, and so they were immortal. They had continued to grow in Kronos' stomach.)

Together, the three of them raised an army and fought against the Titans, defeating them after a long struggle. This was the War of the Titans. The three brothers chopped up their father Kronos into pieces and cast them into the deepest part of the underworld, Tartarus. They then had children who took the place of the previous Titan Gods. (For example, Helios, the Titan god of the Sun, was replaced by Zeus' son, Apollo.)

Not all Titans were evil, however. Gaia, the Goddess of Nature, helped her sons escape while Prometheus, the Titan God of Technology, gave the gift of Fire to humans.
