With that said, Confederates could at times plant torpedoes in the river and fire artillery from hidden areas. River cargo, however, was never even close to 1860 tonnage.

Prior to the US Civil War, the Mississippi River supported a substantial amount of commercial traffic. In 1860 for example, one thousand commercial vessels operated on the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. At least some 190,000 tons of products were trans ported on the river.

The one and only president of the Confederacy was born in Kentucky, but also lived in Louisiana and Mississippi. He was serving as a U.S. Senator from Mississippi when Southern states began seceding from the Union in 1860 and 1861.
