The Wiemar constitution featured the following-

  • The president
  • The Chancellor
  • The Reichstag and of course the German public.

The president was elected every 7 years in which the German public would have elected. The chancellor was chosen by the president and needed a majority of support off the reichstag. The reichstag (parliament) was voted for by the German people using proportional representation. The German public were aloud to vote if they were over the age of 20, also then they were able to elect a president every 7 years.

Strengths:

It gave every German citizen equality under the law

All men and women over 20 were given the vote

It was a Democracy so was fair on all members of the German public

Weaknesses:

Proportional Representation- This meant The number of seats won was proportional to the number of votes received. However this lead to many small parties meaning coalitions were formed often. These meant disputes between parties.

Article 48- This article said that the president could issue decrees without the Reichstag. This article was used by Hitler later on to gain more power.

The inherent defects of weimar constitution were -:

1) Articlas 48 - This gave president all the power like to suspend civil rights and rule by decree.

2) Proportional representation - this made achieving a majority party an impossible task and led to coalitions.

yet democracy was indeed a young and fragile idea at that time in gremany which could not stand against Dictatorship....
