Shinto was perhaps the most popular of these religions, but you have to take into account that Shinto incorporates many aspects of Buddhism into it's belief system. Within the "umbrella" of Buddhism were several different sects. Nichiren, Tendai and Zen sects were all popular among the Samurai as well. Christianity also made an appearance among the Samurai. This didn't really grab a foothold in Japan until the end of the 16th century.
