During the US Civil War trenches were used on both sides as a tactical method for defense and to launch counter attacks. This was also a tactic used in WW 1.

During World War One just as in the US Civil War, the side conducting the offensive often believed that, or better said, were under the delusion that the attacks only failed by a very narrow margin. Thus the reason for continuing these tactics that made "canon fodder" of mostly Union forces.
Some were good but most were very bad because of poor leadership by sir Douglas haig.
