Elements, as in the Periodic Table of Elements, are each a collection of subatomic particles which have stuck together in a stable pattern to form an atom.

If there were no elements and no atoms, then substances would not exist. There would be no Hydrogen, no Helium, no Lithium or any other element. And there would be no molecules, and there would be no organic chemistry and no people.

The universe would thus consist of nothing but a swarm of unjoined sub-atomic particles. It would be invisible since no eye could exist to see it. And nobody would be present to witness or measure it.
