Autobiography, autocrat, autograph, automaker, automate, automatic, automatically, automation, automobile, autopilot, autopsy and autoworker are words that begin with auto.
Automation, automaton, and many other words have the "prefix" (fix as in "added on" to the "beginning" of a word, so, occurring "before" is the meaning on "pre-" in this case).
Auto is used today to mean an "automobile" in a short form, because it is a vehicle that propels itself using its own engine (as compared to "olden days" when a wagon or carriage was pulled by a horse, so no "self" propelled).
The prefix "auto-" means "self" (or "same"). So when a famous person (or any person, really) signs their name to a piece of paper it is called an "autograph". The root part of the word, "-graph" means writing or written, so it is a "self-written signature".
Other examples include "autobus" (hardly ever used any more, but same as "automobile" except that it refers to what we now call a "bus"), "autoimmune" describes the type of disease where the body's defenses attack itself under the (mistaken) impression that some part of the body is "not-self" and is a danger to the rest of the body. "autoinjection" means "self injected" as when a person uses a syringe to inject medicine into their own body. "Autoionization" is when an atom gives off an electron to become a positively charged ion, but without this effect being caused or the result of an by interaction with another atom.
