Being a professional princely army, Hessians upheld a strong code of honour. They usually had nothing to gain from the conflict, but fought anyway because it was their duty as soldiers. They served out of a sense of loyalty to their princes and their States.

To have a sense of nationalism means to have a sense of strong pride in ones country; it creates the feeling of unity amoung citizens. Without it, countries are more suseptible to takeovers and invasions.

Loyalty means being absoulutely true to something or someone. Loyalty may be defined as a sense of the value of an institution and its members, combined with a wish to serve the latter and preserve the former.
The word that means a strong sense of pride is "hubris." It often conveys an excessive or arrogant pride that can lead to downfall.
