Platypuses are small creatures. A male platypus is 50-60 cm in length, whilst the female is smaller, averaging 40-50 cm in length. They are very lightly built creatures, with females weighing as little as 900 grams, and males around 2kg.
Whilst some may say the platypus has a unique appearance similar to that of part beaver and part duck, it really does not look like that at all. It is covered in fur, and its head is flat and streamlined for swimming under the water's surface.
The colour of a platypus's fur is dark brown over most of its body, with a grey undercoat. Its belly is gold-coloured or silky grey.
Its bill is different in shape to that of a duck, so even the term "duck-billed platypus" is a misnomer. It has webbed feet, claws and a flat tail, and lives in burrows in riverbanks. Its feet are not permanently webbed, as the membrane that stretches to help it swim swiftly retracts for the purpose of digging.
It is one of the few venomous mammals; the male Platypus has a spur on the hind foot which delivers a poison capable of killing a small dog or causing severe pain to humans.
The platypus's bill is a dark slate grey in colour. It is not made out of bone or cartilage, but of a leathery skin.
Despite this creature often incorrectly being called a "duck-billed platypus", the bill is broader and flatter than a duck's bill. It contains sensitive electroreceptors which can pick up tiny electrical impulses from aquatic animals and insect larvae underwater, which is what the platypus eats.

DNA help classify the platypus because with out it the DNA the platypus would be classified with the marsupials which would be wrong.
No. This would be illegal, foolish and detrimental to the good of the platypus.
That depends. Are you a platypus too? if you are not, then it would be considered wrong in most circles to be in love with a Platypus.
No
You would not use a platypus anywhere. However, you might encounter one in Australia.
The platypus has a dark brown head with two small eyes. It is unusual because its mouth is a bill. Although many believe the platypus's bill to resemble a duck's bill, it is in fact quite different. The platypus's bill is broader and flatter than a duck's bill.
No. There are no antelope in Australia, which is the natural home of the platypus. Even if there were, it is highly unlikely that an antelope would wish to eat a platypus.
The Platypus does live in Eastern Australia
Lizards such as goannas are the most likely predators of platypus eggs.
A male platypus could kill a cat. It would have enough venom in its spur to achieve this. A female platypus does not have a venomous spur.
