Thomas Jefferson stated the reasons Americans believed they had the right to revolt from Great Britain. He wrote in the Declaration of Indepdendence, ". . .all men are created equal, that they are endowed . . .with certain unalienable Rights, . . .That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institue new Government, . . ." In other words, if the government in Great Britain (King and Parliament) will not respect the basic rights of the American colonists (who are British citizens), and if that King and Parliament will continue to enact laws without the consent of the colonists, then the colonies must break from England and form their own government.
