Some of the things a typical "Tommy" would have carried into battle: Rifle, bayonet, entrenching tool, water, personal ammunition, gas mask, mills bombs, bedroll, machine-gun ammunition, rations, greatcoat, underclothes, paybook, bandage, mess tin.
A normal solider would carry a bolt-action rifle with a bayonet to put on the end. They usually had a combat/utility knife aside from the bayonet. Soldiers in ww1 did not carry a sidearm, which was seen as the "officer's weapon" They usually had several grenades as well. It's not much, but it's enough to kill.

My father served from beginning to end in WWII, but he wasn't in combat much. I expect that was a typical experience for most soldiers. No soldier in any war is 'in combat' all the time, i.e. actually fighting the enemy.
