If you have a front wheel drive car the noise is most likely a upper strut mount/support.They will rattle and make a lot of noise but generally they are never a safety concern. Since you did not list much info, this is only a guess. I actually just had the R&R Manifold Gasket replaced. The noises started after the replacement...could this have anything to do with it? Also check the right side motor mount. To do this, get a small pry bar and pry up the motor mount about 1/4 to 1/2 inch then release it fast. If you duplicate the knocking noise, the mount is bad.
u knocking on it
A hole in the muffler would cause a knocking sound in your muffler. A loose exhaust pipe can also cause a knocking noise.

Tornadoes cause blackouts by bringing down power lines, either by knocking trees into them or by directly knocking over or even blowing away utility poles.
A bad harmonic balancer can cause a knocking noise. The harmonic balancer doesn't actually produce the noise, but it can cause the noise in the engine.
