We would not be able to bend forward from the hip if the spine was a single bone fused to the pelvis. The vertebrates in the spine allows for some flexibility in our movements. A flexibility often shown to a remarkable degree when gymnasts are performing.

I think that if we had only one bone from the top of our head to our feet, we would be very vulnerable to injuries. Many of the organs would not be protected by bone.
