Expansion and contraction with heat and cold causes the road to swell and shrink. the gaps are for that purpose so the road or bridge would buckle and break if they were not there! Before this was discovered things broke often

∙ 12y agoThese are expansion gaps. Engineers design these gaps to allow the structure to expand and contract as the temperature changes. If these gaps were not present, members would expand and contract with changes in temperature and create unintended stresses in the structural members.
